School is starting and parents have a new routine. The Smithville Safe Routes to School Plan called to improve safety by making the three streets surrounding the Elementary and Junior High schools into one-way streets during school hours. On August 9, 2010, the City Council passed the ordinance that requires 9th Street and Wilkes to become one-way streets, like Bishop already is, during school hours.

Thanks to everyone in Smithville! As May 6, our community's participation rate was 77% -- 10% higher than our rate in 2000, 5% higher than the national average, and 8% higher than the Texas state average. Congratulations to all the volunteers who spoke to their friends and neighbors about the Census and helped to get people to turn in their forms. Please open your door to the Census Takers who will drop by if Census has not yet received your form. Don't be surprised if you recognize them! If YOU want to be a Census Taker, jobs are still available for our community.
