All to see, lest we forget, those who help to keep us free. ~ Polly Henderson, Former Blue Star Memorial Chair
At the City Council meeting on Monday, December 14, 2009, former mayor Renee Blaschke presented a proposal to install a Blue Star Memorial Marker at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Council voted unanimously to support the Memorial. The Blue Star Memorial Program has been honoring the men and women of the Armed Forces of America since 1945. Sponsored by the National Garden Clubs, local garden clubs must vote to have a marker, select an appropriate site and choose the type of marker, and raise the needed funds to purchase the marker. Local garden club enthusiasts have generously underwritten the cost of the marker. The City has agreed to accept the marker, install it at an appropriate site in Oak Hill Cemetery, and assist with the memorial service celebration that the Smithville Garden Club plans to hold upon its placement this spring. Bastrop County has one of the highest proportions of veterans in the U.S., and this memorial recognizes their dedication and courage in service to our country. Ms. Blaschke, Mayor Bunte, and the City Council hope this is the first of many Blue Star memorial markers in Smithville.
