Census 2010 will provide many opportunities for Smithville. To start, their recruitment office is opening up many employment opportunities (up to $17/hr for full- or part-time work). These are short-term jobs (most will end by September), but can offer a tremendous and unique chance for people 18 and over to begin a great career, or to make a little extra money in the meantime. They need to recruit more than 8,000 applicants in the five county region to make operations run smoothly. Positions include: * Census takers * Crew leaders * Crew leader assistants * Recruiting assistants * Census clerks Most jobs will be close to home -- Census takers, crew leaders, and crew leader assistants will primarily work within their own neighborhoods and will be very familiar with the people and places. Recruiting assistants will work in the field, and census clerks will work at a Local Census Office. Census will pay for training and authorized mileage. Come to City Hall to pick up an application, call Census at 1-866-861-2010 (TTY: 1-800-877-8339), or check the Census website for more information. You will need to take a test to qualify for entry into their database. People will be hired based on their scores. Veterans will be given preference. FEMA has released more information about threats of wildfires in Texas. Please remember that Smithville is hosting a "firewise" workshop on Saturday, February 11 from 9AM-11AM at the Recreation Center to give you the information and tools you need to reduce the threat of wildfires near your home.
If you have a child in school in Smithville, please take our survey to let us know about how you feel about allowing students in your care to walk or bike to school. This is required through the grant we received for Safe Routes to School, and your answers will help us measure how well the program is working. We always knew it, but Smithville is now officially a member of "Communities of Character" through the International Character First program. The character traits emphasized include: Loyalty, Justice, Self-Reliance, Self-Discipline, Integrity, Honor, Patriotism, Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, Compassion, and Perseverance. Smithville’s participation in this program is a natural extension of its strong tradition of service. Citizens take great pride in the many programs and projects that have been accomplished as a result of tenacious and committed volunteers.
