Cities of Service Volunteer Plan

In 2009, Smithville became a member of Cities of Service, which was created out of a call to action by finding new and innovative ways to harness the power of volunteers. Our Smithville Plan of Service, "Volunteer Smithville! Small Town / Big Hearts," was created as a result of our membership, and provides an outline of how the City can continue to support and assist our volunteer organizations, using the Safe Routes to School Crossing Guard program as a model.

Subsequent to the Plan, Cities of Service and the OneStar Foundation provided funding to the consultants of Voluntology to help us develop the job descriptions, evaluation forms, and other mechanics to enable us to begin the volunteer Crossing Guard Program. This program booklet is designed so that it can be a model that any nonprofit organization can modify to fit their own needs. The Crossing Guard Program is about to be put into place after our initial work with it last year. Look for more information on this program to come.

Smithville is steeped in a long tradition of volunteerism and service. Even before it was established as a city, Smithville residents worked together to ensure that the quality of life for our citizens continually improved, for example by the Masons who established the first schools. Since then, many people have created "Friends" organizations that have adopted various projects and have dedicated their purposes to creating something from nothing.

The city is fortunate that our residential base includes a diverse group of skilled retirees, enthusiastic youth, and motivated individuals who help get things done. The community has established multiple volunteer organizations that undertake a wide range of activities, which elected officials and staff endeavor to support as much as possible.

We greatly value our community, and the many individuals who volunteer their time and talents to make it what it is. Many thanks to everyone who provides their energy and experience to volunteer projects that improve the quality of life here for all.

2011 Comprehensive Planning Process Nears End

As 2011 is winding down, we have just a few final components to discuss to complete our Comprehensive Plan. Please join us to discuss your ideas about our Transportation Needs, Housing Issues, and using the Arts for Economic Development. Three meetings will take place in December. Following those meetings, LCRA will compile all the data we've provided on Historic Preservation, Economic Development, Community Development, Parks and Recreation, and so on. The Final Report will be available to the public early in 2012.
