A little bit of History...

  • In the late 1940s, a group of WWII veterans put together a flying club on the Northeast side of Smithville. A few single engine light airplanes and a grass runway were the start of things to come.
  • In 1976, in time to celebrate the Nation’s Bicentennial, the city purchased 62 acres of land to build a municipal airport. A new 3200’ x 50’ paved lighted runway was completed. A small ramp/apron area was built along with a large maintenance hangar.
  • About 15 years later, a couple of local pilots worked with the City Manager, Council and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to apply for grant funding to expand and improve facilities. In 1999, TxDOT approved substantial grant funding and construction began, lengthening Runway 17-35 to 4000’ x 75’. A larger ramp/apron area and a new pilots lounge were constructed at that time.
  • In September 2001, the City celebrated the success of this project with a formal dedication of the expanded and improved airport.

Recent Activities and Improvements at the Airport

  • In 2011, a small grant was approved for re-sealing the Runway and ramp area, along with new approach lighting (PAPI).
  • Since 2013, 16 new hangars have been built to help meet the growing demand. In 2022, the City paved the Taxiway to 10 City-Owned Hangars.
  • In 2014, the City Manager and Airport Manager, working with Airport Advisory Board applied TxDOT grant application for $100k (cost share 90/10%) Master Plan, design, and best use of property -- this became the 2017 Smithville Crawford Municipal Airport Development Plan.
  • Currently, the Airport boasts one active flight school and three active CFIs. The local Pilot Association is very active, supporting the Annual Fly-In, EAA Young Eagles® Rallies, and hosting several public events.
  • In April 2023, the new Instrument Approach Procedure was published!
