City Council

The City of Smithville is governed by a Council-Manager form of government in which the Council establishes City policy through ordinances and resolutions, and the City Manager carries out City policy and is responsible for City operations. The Smithville City Council consists of the Mayor and five Council members. The Mayor and Council are elected at large, which means they represent the entire City, and all registered voters may vote for all six places.

May 2, 2026, General Election - Early Voting and Election Day Voting to be held at the Smithville Recreation Center, 106 Royston Street, Smithville, Texas

The first day to file an Application for Place on the Ballot, for Mayor, and Council Positions 4, and 5, for May 2, 2026, General Election will be January 14, 2026; the last day to file an Application for Place on the Ballot will be February 13, 2026, by 5 pm.

The last day to file as a write-in candidate will be February 17, 2026, for the General Election.

Candidate Eligibility Requirements

Deadline to File Candidate Application

  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age or older on the first day of the term to be filled at the election or on the date of appointment.
  • Must be a registered voter by the last day of the application period.
  • Must have resided continuously in the corporate limits of the City for twelve (12) months immediately preceding the date of the election or on the date of appointment of Mayor. 
  • Must have resided continuously in the corporate limits of the City for six (6) months immediately preceding the date of the election or on the date of appointment of Councilmember.
  • Must Not have been determined mentally incapacitated by a final judgment of a court.
  • Must Not have been finally convicted of a felony (unless pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
  • Must satisfy any other requirement prescribed by law for the office

Candidate Packets, including the application, are available in the City Secretary's office the first week of January.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to obtain a candidate packet.

Forms are available on the Secretary of State website and the Texas Ethics Commission website but the full Candidate Packet is obtained from the City Secretary.

  • Debe ser ciudadano de los Estados Unidos.

  • Debe tener al menos 18 años de edad o más el primer día del período que se cumplirá en la elección o en la fecha de la cita.

  • Debe ser un votante registrado antes del último día del período de solicitud.

  • Debe haber residido continuamente en los límites corporativos de la Ciudad durante doce (12) meses inmediatamente anteriores a la fecha de la elección o en la fecha de la cita.

  • No Debe haber sido determinado mentalmente incapacitado por un juicio final de un tribunal.

  • No Debe haber sido finalmente condenado por un delito grave (a menos que sea indultado o liberado de otra manera de las discapacidades resultantes.
